Visit the ancient cities of the Holy Land with Tauck

World leaders in enriching travel experiences, Tauck World Discovery has announced a new 2010 itinerary to Israel and Jordan. The guided 14-day tour will take you on walking tours of Israel and Jordan’s antiquities, sailing on the Sea of Galilee and motoring along the King’s Highway.

The tour starts in the bustling centre of Tel Aviv, with a welcome cocktail party and dinner reception at the InterContinental hotel, which will be your accommodation for the next two nights as you explore Tel Aviv and the 4,000 year old port city of Jaffa with Tauck’s expert guides.

The tour moves to Herod’s ancient Caesarea, a grand city dedicated to Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus, where you will visit ancient sites including a Roman ampitheatre and a hippodrome which attracted 20,000 spectators to watch the chariot races.  After lunch at a family winery, it is time to travel to Haifa and the Shrine of the Bab, entombing the remains of the Bab, Baha’i Allah, the herald of the Baha’i Faith.

Day 4 takes you aboard a replica of a 2,000 year old fishing boat to cruise the Sea of Galilee, and day 5 to Akko, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world dating back to the era of the Egyptian Pharoah Thutmose. Tauck is renowned for its ‘exclusives’ and one awaits you with lunch at the Uri Buri Restaurant, famous throughout Israel for its cuisine. It is then off to the holy city of Jerusalem, where you will stay for four nights at the luxurious David Citadel.

Key highlights during your time in Jerusalem will include the walking tours – one of which is the Via Dolorosa, the route that Jesus walked carrying the cross to the site of the crucifixion. You will also visit the tomb of King David’s son, Absalom and attend a private reception at the Tower of David Museum and watch the story of Jerusalem unfold in a spectacular image and light display.

On day 9, guests can choose to stay in Jerusalem or travel to Bethlehem and visit the Church of Nativity, believed to be built over the birthplace of Jesus.  The tour then moves to Jordan, where you will stay at the Movenpick Resort and Spa on the Dead Sea for the next three nights.

Whilst in Jordan, you can choose to enjoy the resort’s spa facilities or experience the many sightseeing activities that have been planned with your guides, including a visit to the ancient city of Gerasa (Jerash). On day 11, you’ll head south on the King’s Highway, the oldest continuously used trading route in the world and visit historic churches and biblical sites including Bethany Beyond the Jordan, where Jesus is believed to have been baptised by John the Baptist.

Day 12 takes you to Petra, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The well preserved biblical site includes the world famous Treasury, royal tombs and temples. A camel ride and farewell cocktail party will bring the day to a close. Your final day takes you to Mount Nebo to view Jericho, the Dead Sea, the River Jordan and Jerusalem, and then it is on to Amman where guests will overnight at Le Meridien before flying home. For those seeking an extended stay in the region, consider Tauck’s Egypt – Jewels along the Nile tour departing Cairo, Egypt.
