Visit California responds to proposed defunding of Brand USA

Visit California President & CEO Caroline Beteta today released the following statement in response to the White House budget proposal to defund Brand USA. Visit California is leading a delegation of California tourism industry leaders and elected officials this week on a CEO Mission to Mexico and Canada, part of its “All Dreams Welcome” initiative to reaffirm that the Golden State is a destination that welcomes international travelers.

“It’s counterintuitive as to why Brand USA was not included in the President’s budget considering there are absolutely no losers in doing so. This organization uses no taxpayer dollars and actually generates millions in tax revenue.

“History has demonstrated that neither candlelight vigils nor military might can bring about peace and stability, and this incredible public-private partnership is no doubt America’s strongest form of public diplomacy.

“I’m hopeful that for all of America’s sake, the President will reconsider this decision as part of his budget deliberations with Congress.”

Visit California is a nonprofit organization with a mission to develop and maintain marketing programs – in partnership with the state’s travel industry – that keep California top-of-mind as a premier travel destination. According to Visit California, spending by travelers totaled $126.3 billion in 2016 in California, generating nearly 1.1 million jobs in the state and $10.3 billion in state and local tax revenues.
