Kind Edward VII was famous as much for his colourful personal life as for his royal reign, and Paris was one place where he enjoyed himself to the fullest. Today’s visitors to the French capital can do the same at Hôtel Edouard 7, a charming hotel discreetly located in what was the English king’s private mansion, a residence he retained until his passing in 1910. One of the most conveniently positioned hotels in Paris, Hôtel Edouard 7 makes a perfect base for visiting the city’s most famous sights sights. The beautiful Opéra Garnier is just about 200 metres up the road; the Printemps and Galeries Lafayette department stores and Place de la Madeleine are each a five-minute walk away in one direction while the Comédie Française, the Palais Royal, and the Louvre are five minutes away in the other. The famous fashion boutiques along rue Faubourg du St Honoré are even closer. This area of Paris was certainly Edward VII’s neighbourhood; also close by is the Edward VII Theatre, fronted by a large statue of the king in all his equestrian splendour.

One of the most pleasing aspects of a stay at Hôtel Edouard 7 is the friendly staff eager to assist the guests. Service with style and a smile is the rule following the example set by dynamic general manager Emmanuelle Smith, whose considerable professional experience in Paris hotels serves the Edouard 7 well. Along with Hôtel de Sers and Hôtel Vernet, Hôtel Edouard 7 is a member of the family-owned B Signature group of hotels. In these days of transnational acquisitions, it is rare to find the kind of small, French-owned hotel group that can deliver personal attention to guests in the designer-chic ambience for which the country has long been renowned. Hôtel Edouard 7 perfectly exemplifies the French savoir faire in creating a unique atmosphere in the public rooms, restaurant, bar, and the hotel’s 69 guestrooms, 10 of which are suites and junior suites.

This week, Hôtel Edouard 7‘s effervescent executive chef Rémy Fourneax brings his new Spring Menu to the hotel’s acclaimed restaurant, La Cuisine de l’E7. The bright, airy dining room is characteristic of hoteledouard7′s clean lines and elegant simplicity, also found in the rooms. Each floor of the hotel has a theme, with the Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, and Citrine floors all reflecting the colours of their respective gemstones. The Couture rooms on the upper floors are equally stylish. With the glorious Opéra Garnier building visible from the balconies of rooms facing Avenue de l’Opéra, one of the city’s most graceful landmarks is just out the French doors which allow a lot of natural light in but keep city noise out. The superior glazing insulates the room from sounds of the street below, so no worries about traffic interfering with a good night’s sleep in a thoroughly satisfying surprise package on the Paris hotel scene.
