Kempinski Grand Hôtel des Bains: Taking the waters in Switzerland
The big reputation of the small village of St Moritz in Switzerland’s beautiful canton of Graubünden rests mainly on a spectacular setting, glamorous boutiques, grand five-star hotels, and the privileged people who visit them. Less familiar to today’s travellers is the fact that the mineral springs here have been visited since more than a thousand years BC; later, St Moritz was known to the Ancient Romans as a destination to soak in the medicinal mineral springs which today are still enjoyed by modern Romans along with people from all over the world. Kempinski Grand Hôtel des Bains is the only five-star hotel in St Moritz located in the area know as St Moritz Bad (which means ‘bath’ in German). A recent renovation has enlivened this classic European hotel with a new vivacity most visible in the friendly staff seemingly always on hand to assist guests with their needs.
Not surprisingly, this Kempinski property in particular is known for its spa treatments and services. The highly mineralised water comes into the hotel directly from the spring; guests can bathe in it, of course, but there is also a tap in the spa to drink it. Treatments are first rate and the swimming pool with its rock wall is exemplary of the sense of relaxation wellbeing so highly sought after by guests here. For active pursuits beyond the hotel, there is still time to catch the end of Kempinski Grand Hôtel des Bains‘ special winter offer of a free ski pass with a minimum stay of three nights. The offer is valid until 2 April.
Even by Switzerland’s generous standards, room and suites at Kempinski Grand Hôtel des Bains are unusually spacious. For families, friends, or corporate guests wanting the full home away from home feeling, the Residences wing of the property provides luxurious apartments with full hotel services complemented by the last word in privacy and discretion.
Next to the hotel is the Forum Paracelsus, now a small museum and events centre which gives insight into the history of St Moritz as a spa destination. There is also a fountain here for visitors to taste the water that made the village famous. Kempinski can arrange for meetings and other functions to be held here.
St Moritz is easily reached from Zurich Airport and points across the county by Switzerland’s excellent rail network. Kempinski provides a complimentary transfer service from St Moritz train station to the hotel.
