Marriott Marquis Houston dubbed the modern Texas

Opening December 26, 2016, the 1,000-room Marriott Marquis Houston reveals how the design of a large scale hotel can be reimagined with the boutique in mind. By focusing on one-of-a-kind features, and using the local region as inspiration, Marriott Marquis Houston transforms from a convention hotel into a world-class destination. Looney and Associates, out of Dallas, Texas, intertwine the progressive vitality of Houston with the genuine hospitality of Texas throughout the hotel’s design.

Inspired by the winding patchwork of the region’s diverse landscape Looney and Associates created a cohesive design that incorporates organic elements alongside design features that encapsulate Houston’s progressive, resolute and enterprising philosophy.

The Hotel Great Room

The lobby entrance, considered the “Great Room,” prominently displays the hotel’s design ethos: “The Modern Texan.” The space presents a feeling of confidence within a layout that is relaxed, refined, and inspired by the city’s topography featuring fluid shapes and lines that mimic the city’s roads and waterways. The ceiling is comprised of a dramatic inlay of textured, three-dimensional metallic and sparkling ribbons that flow like moving bodies of water from end to end. The Great Room’s light stone flooring, sourced from Turkey, also features weaving dark lines representative of the city’s freeway system. The same hyper-local elements of texture and design inspiration are woven throughout the space with curvilinear lounge seating and patterned area rugs. The great room ties together function and spectacle providing all of the expected amenities of a convention hotel lobby amid a unique avant-garde design.

The elevators in the Marriott Marquis Houston are unique, and each one was thoughtfully included in the overall design of the hotel. When the doors open a giant print of an astronaut is revealed, so as guests step into the elevator they are given the impression of moving through space – literally – and are reminded of Houston’s remarkable history as the hometown of NASA. Each elevator features a unique image of an astronaut floating in space, telling the story of space travel through each ride.

Guest Rooms

The hotel’s accommodations are designed to capture the bold, fearless spirit of the city while also offering luxurious bedding, spacious work desks and stunning views. The art selected for the guest rooms possess an otherworldly perspective, continuing the ode to NASA, each room features prints of a glowing night sky or a close up of planetary rings. Each room echoes Marriott Marquis Houston’s focus on not only the meeting and convention travelers but also the leisure and luxury patrons; the design aesthetic balances utility with beauty and sleekness with soul. Indulging guests with more natural light, open space and expansive sightlines in every room, the Marriott Marquis Houston is truly an urban oasis in the heart of Houston. The beds in each guestroom meet the signature luxurious standard that Marquis Hotels are known for. The work areas feature custom-designed desks and ergonomic chairs perfect for busy travelers. Each room has an elegant bathroom with an organic palate of whites, creams and browns, echoing the ethos of THANN™, the all-natural luxury spa line from Thailand used in every bathroom.

Parkview Terrace

The Marriott Marquis Houston’s Parkview Terrace boasts the world’s only Texas-shaped rooftop lazy river. Perched 110 feet in the air and surrounded by Houston’s soaring downtown skyline, water flows along the outline of the lone-star state from the Panhandle to north Texas around Dallas, to east Texas along the Louisiana border, to Houston and the Mexico border. Approaching El Paso the river appears to disappear off the edge of the building with views looking down on Discovery Green Park below. Surrounded by resort-style chaise lounges with umbrellas and additional lounges submerged underwater, the infinity pool, flows off the rooftop and floods into views of the park below. Six large cabanas made by Kettal and fifteen smaller coverings fill out the Parkview Terrace with ample lounging options. The larger cabanas feature refrigerators, televisions, and storage suitable for a full day in the sun or a group meeting. The smaller cabanas host chaise lounges within a covered area out of the sun. Two fire pits are located at the entrance to the terrace surrounded by rocking chairs with seating for 10-12, offering guests a way to enjoy Houston’s fantastic evening weather and the hotel’s stunning nighttime views.

Marriott Marquis Houston Art Collection

The art collection at the Marriott Marquis celebrates the city’s entrepreneurial vision and history that elevated Houston beyond a southern city and into a globally recognized destination. Each piece is intended to reveal that story, one of prideful Texan heritage and innovation. The lobby commissions set a tone for creating compelling art moments throughout the entire hotel. Sculpture pieces, such as Rings of Chimera created by Elish Warlop, pay homage to both Houston’s circular street signs as well as NASA’s distinguished space program – a consistent theme throughout the hotels design ethos. Rotate, a mixed media and glass panel piece by Joseph Guay, captures Houston’s international stature and remarkable natural environment with its rocky, glossy surface. The layered textures and patterns demonstrated in Aurora, a mixed media on panel by Jay Kelly, pay tribute to the quiet confidence and refined elegance of Houston’s local community.
