Etihad suspends Damascus services

UAE carrier, Etihad Airways has suspended flights into Damascus, Syria, citing “deteriorating security” in the country and safety of passengers as reasons behind the decision.

Announced this morning with immediate effect, the carrier said the move to ground all flights between Abu Dhabi and Damascus until further notice was “not taken lightly” but stressed passenger and crew safety was “paramount to the airline”.

“Etihad Airways will notify affected passengers and offer a full refund for unused tickets,” the carrier said in a statement.

Earlier this month, Russian flag carrier, Aeroflot also suspended flights into Syria, citing empty seats for its decision, The Moscow Times reported.

According to an airline spokesperson, flights from Damascus to Syria have been “overbooked” while return services have been “practically empty”.
