Dubai expects to double marine tourism

Dubai expects marine tourism to take off over the next four years with a 58.3 percent growth.

At the launch of the new cruise season on board the docked Costa Deliziosa earlier this month, Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing executive director of business development Hamad Mohammad Bin Majren said cruise is an important aspect of Dubai’s tourism and it is growing, the Gulf News reported.

“In 2009 to 2010 there was 30 percent growth,” Mr Bin Majren said.

“In 2011 we expect huge growth.

“By 2015 we expect to reach 190 ship calls with 575,000 passengers.”

Mr Bin Majren added that the cruise line Costa’s entry into the country with the vessel Costa Europa was followed by the entry of several competitors.

The Dubai government made arrangement for the entry of new liners earlier this with the launch of a new cruise terminal at Port Rashid.

Mr Bin Majren said he hoped other Middle Eastern countries would use Dubai as an example and develop their ports.

“We need others to develop so cruises will have more destinations of their itineraries,” he said.

“More options will mean more ships.”
